" AM I THE ONE WHO WAS RIGHT OR THE DRIVER?"

When at all will all these behaviour of us(the Ghanaian citizens) stop? Please help me! Is it that it is not yet time or I am the one who is being too ambitious to see some behavioural change in us? THE ISSUE: Just recently I was a passenger in a vehicle bound for Accra from Takoradi(vehicle registration number withheld). We took off safely and the journey was nice. As usual, passengers bought and ate as the journey progresses and thank God, some passengers are now learning to be responsible citizens and so, at least, in that vehicle, nobody threw their rubbish out through the window but dropped them in the vehicle.

However at a point in the journey, a passenger requested the driver to stop for him/her to urinate. When the driver got down to open the door of the vehicle, he gathered all the rubbish dropped in the car by the passengers and dumped them by the road side along the bushy areas. I remarked; "driver, why don't you wait when you get to your final destination before you throw the rubbish at the right place?." He replied; " but nobody stays here!" I added; "this act contribute in degrading the environment." He said if he takes the rubbish to station he would be 'charged.' Unfortunately, many of the passengers in the car went with the driver that they don't see any wrong with dumping the rubbish there. So I became helpless in trying to exercise my civic responsibility..............and that is usually the case!

So tell me, WAS I WRONG or THE DRIVER?

  • Interestingly, I recently read that we have similar issues in Germany with long distance buses: Drivers empty the toilet in the nature regularly (illegaly).

    • Well Nidi, I think this is part of human nature and if truly that is the case, then it means we should stop demonising Africans only.
